EDE NOTES Norm Scott is OK after Atlantic Ocean comes into his community
Although we all have friends and relatives in the communities devastated by Storm Sandy (I have relatives in New York and New Jersey with whom we still have not be able to make contact), a bit of sort of good news has been forwarded by Susan Ohanian about Norm Scott, known to hundreds of us in Chicago through New York's Ed Notes and his coverage of the AFT conventions. Norm is a retired New York City School Teacher who has been editing Ed Notes for years. Substance visited him at his beautiful home in Rockaway ten years ago, but the area, on the Atlantic Ocean, got some of the worst of it.
Susan forwards the following from Norm:
All OK with Us. In Brooklyn for a few hours. Thanks for all your concerns. We stuck it out and water came within an inch of our main level -- flooded basement, den, garage and laundry room but we and cats are ok. Both cars shot.
Our end on the bay side did not do badly considering the bay met the ocean over the sea wall so that every house was surrounded by 5 or more feet of ocean water -- truly part of the sea. Beach side devastated I hear with some houses totally gone.
No power or cell service -- I had more connectivity in New Zealand and Portugal. Lots of cleanup to do so I will not be on very often until we get it all straightened out -- need new cars, heating system, etc.
