Hearings on the 2013 Hit List announced by CPS

On April 2, 2013, the Chicago Public Schools finally announced the schedule for the legally required hearings for all schools on the 2013 Hit List. The hearings are to begin this Saturday April 6. Each targeted school receives two community hearings at a local high school and one CPS Public hearing at 125 S. Clark. Anyone can testify at the hearings, and for years supporters of the schools on the hit list have attended and testified in support of the schools on the target.

What can we do to show support?

Thanks for publishing the list of hearings. CPS certainly didn't make it easy to find (or filter through) the list on their website.

I'd like to attend some of the meetings on the north side, but (1) am not familiar with elementary schools in general; (2) am totally ignorant about any of the schools slated for closing and their communities. Thus I'm not at all interested in speaking at any hearings.

Any suggestions on how teachers like me might show support for my colleagues and the children of this city?

Support, How To? Speak. Report. Organize!

When the hearings begin Saturday, April 6, 2013, across Chicago (but concentrated on the West Side and the South Side), CPS officials will try to drown out the voices of the people by shortening the hearings, cutting off the speakers from the schools, and conducting the same kind of sham "hearings" they have been doing for ten years. The "hearing" officially is convened to bring evidence before a "hearing officer." The "hearing officer" is there to decide not whether what CPS is doing is right, or even sane -- but whether CPS is within the confines of Illinois law on these matters

CPS officials will then appear before the hearing officer and read from carefully prepared scripts before anyone else is allowed to say a word. They will be stalling as long as possible because most of the hearings will be cut off after less than two hours. (Check the scheduling; it's built in so that most parents, teachers, students and community leaders will be told that "Time is up!" and they should submit their comments in writing).

The only place where the facts of each of these innumerable hearings can be published daily will be here at Substance. So everyone who wants to be "deuputized" as a reporter can simply send us their notes and photographs (JPEG attached to email) to Csubstance@aol.com.

As many people are noting, CPS has deliberately scheduled each "hearing" for two hours or less. They will follow the same script they have followed at every hearing. CPS officials will drone on for an hour or more. Then there will be a speech by the hearing officer.

Then the "public" will be allowed to "speak" -- and then cut off before most of the teachers, students, community leaders and supporters have spoken.

Not one member of the Board of Education will be there, but there will be a dozen or so people wearing suits sitting up front, defrauding the parents and students into believing they are speaking to the "Board."

I covered these hearings for years, and always photographed the "Board" people sitting there, nodding out or trying to look interested. From Arne Duncan's

assassination of Williams, Dodge and Terrell in 2002 to Ron Huberman's vicious attacks on Carpenter, Andersen and others a couple of years ago, these stories would never have been recalled had we not had reporters to cover the stories, photograph the hearings, and report the results at Substance.

The Board members refused to even read the transcripts of the pleas of their victims, relying at the Board meetings when the votes were taken on the "Hearing Officer Report."

The whole thing would be appropriate in a Dickens novel, or as a part of something added to Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. Anyone can be a reporter, and the best I can offer from day to day will be my hard work, despite some physical setbacks between midnight and dawn every day that these shams are being carried out.

We have done some good work so far, as far back as the "Commission." But the next month will be the most challenging. The people will speak, thousands of them, eloquently in the poetry of democracy. But unless we record it, the loss to the "record" will be tragic.
