Washington parents planning lawsuit against punitive high school exist exam

The Parent Empowerment Network (PEN) in the State of Washington is worth taking a look at.

Parents in Washington are preparing a lawsuit on behalf of seniors who will be denied diplomas because of the state’s standardized testing. The [http://www. Mothersagainst wasl.org/member.html]

Parent Empowerment Network (PEN) estimates that over 12,000 seniors will be denied diplomas because of their performance on a single, invalid measurement.

Over the past several months, PEN has worked hard to gather together the legal team needed to file legal action on behalf of the students in the class of 2008 who are threatened with denied diplomas because of Washington’s exit exam: Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). They have made great progress and have retained the services of Darrell Cochran of Gordon, Thomas and Honeywell and the services of Disabilities Rights Advocates in California to develop a winning case. In addition, PEN’s attorney, Jeffry Finer of Spokane, will continue to work on the case as part of the team.

Their first goal is as it always has been: that NOT ONE STUDENT be denied a diploma because of WASL failure.

PEN needs your help with legal funding. If you are a friend, parent, grandparent, teacher, aunt, uncle, sister, or brother of a student in the class of 2008 or beyond — or just a concerned citizen — please sponsor one or more seniors @ $20 each. Sponsorships for the 12,014 seniors scheduled to be denied diplomas will generate the needed funds for the first phase of PEN’s legal action.

PEN’s first goal is to stop the denial of diplomas to students in the Class of 2008. PEN’s second goal is to stop the WASL itself and prevent it from destroying the education of hundreds of thousands of younger students.
