LETTER: Was Substance High Schools Fair report unfair to Austin Polytech?

[Editor's Note: The following letter, from a Substance reader, will also appear in the November print edition of Substance. The photograph mentioned in the letter is published here. As noted in the article, CPS had two separate rooms. The photo in our previous article depicted the room where the schools were arrayed. The photograph here was from the vocational room. Both accurately reflect what was taking place at McCormick Place on October 10, 2009. George N. Schmidt, Editor].

George:

I've subscribed to Substance for a few years. I moved from Tilden HS to Austin Polytech (both Union).

The craziness at Tilden HS is impossibe for teachers there, mostly because of the administration. The small schools concept is better for kids. Anonymous kids at big schools get in trouble. Small schools know all their kids.

A student from Austin Polytech demonstrates a lathe at the October 10 High School Fair at McCormick Place. Substance photo courtesy of Tom O'Brien. I had the second booth from Austin Polytech and I was showing parents and students how a lathe works till 12:45pm (see attached picture). So get your story straight and don't trash a Union charter small schools since we need more of them!

Thanks

Tom O'Brien. Teacher, Austin Polytech, Chiciago
