Substance photo by Jean Schwab.Just hours before thousands of protesters showed up west of Chicago's Loop to protest the attempted appearance in Chicago of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, a spirited protest on both sides of State Street hit a Republican fundraiser. The protesters were angry at the destruction of Illinois public services caused by Republican Governor Bruce Rauner and made it clear. The events took place on Friday, March 11, 2016.
There were about two hundred demonstrators at the downtown march and rally. There were many of them in front of the main entrance to the historic Palmer House Hotel (the Monroe St. side) chanting "Fire Rauner." Some of the protesters were across the street chanting back "Fire Rauner" in tandem with those in front of the hotel's Monroe St. entrance. They marched from the front door of the famous hotel on Monroe St. to the side door of Palmer House arcade entrance chanting.
Police on both sides of the street blocked protesting people from crossing the street or stopping traffic. There were many disabled people (several in wheelchairs) and children at the event.
