Boardwatch August 27, 2008: Board refuses to replace Attucks school boiler, then closes the school as part of the ongoing school closings along the "State Street Corridor"

Marynette Giles (Attucks Elementary School) complained that the Board was closing Attucks (39th and Dearborn) because the Board had failed to replace a broken boiler. After approving a $1 billion capital improvement budget, Board members explained to Giles that the old boiler “couldn’t be repaired” and that the children from Attucks would be sent to Farren Elementary School, two miles south of Attucks.
