In December 2010, the major candidates for mayor were on the stump, and one of their stops was at Walter Payton High School. There, a candidates' forum on education was held. Two candidates did not attend the forum: Rahm Emanuel and Danny Davis. Substance reported what each of them said (including the teacher bashing of Rev. Sen. James Meeks, who was pushing the "get rid of bad teachers line") at the time in a long article by Jim Vail, who was then a Substance reporter.

Four of the six major candidates for mayor of Chicago took part in the December 15, 2010 forum on education held at Walter Payton High Schools. Above, left to right: Gery Chico, Miguel Del Valle, Carole Mosely Braun, and James Meeks. The forum was moderated by Andy Shaw, who was already preaching the Rahm Emanuel line that Chicago has the nation's "shortest school day" even though Emanuel avoided the forum. Substance photo.
