Candidates for teacher trustee positions on Chicago Teachers Pension Fund are certified... Active duty teachers to elect two trustees in November 9, 2012 election. Four candidates are in the race.

There will be four candidates on the ballot at the November 9, 2012 election for two teacher trustees of the Chicago Teachers Pension Fund. Incumbents Jay Rehak and Lois Ashford, who currently are serving as President and Vice President of the CTPF, are running for re-election. The challengers are Mark Ochoa and Kelly McFarlane. All of the candidates are active-duty teachers with ten years or more service, the requirements for serving as fund trustees.

"On October 2, 2012, CTPF sent out an announcement: "The following individuals met the eligibility criteria, submitted petitions, and were certified to run for office:

Lois W. Ashford Kelly McFarlane

Mark Ochoa

Jay C. Rehak"

Further information is available at the CTPF website.

The Teacher Trustee Election will be conducted in schools and in the CTPF office at 203 N. LaSalle St. in Chicago on Friday, November 9, 2012. Teachers and other active contributors will elect two trustees to serve three-year terms from November 2012 - November 2015.

Candidate statements and additional election information can be found on the Election Central page at www.ctpf.org.

Candidate posters and polling place information will be distributed to all schools in the next week.

The election will take place in all real Chicago public schools and in all Chicago charter schools where some or all teachers are members of the teachers pension fund. (Not all charter school teachers are members of the CTPF; those schools where teachers are members are supposed to have pension representatives at their charter schools, although Substance has learned that at some charter schools there are no pension reps, apparently because some charter operators are fearful that the pension rep will evolve into a union rep; most Chicago charters are anti-union).

Teachers who will not be available to vote on November 9 may request an absentee ballot. The request for an absentee ballot must be made by October 9. Completed ballots must be received no later than November 9. Members may download an absentee ballot request at the CTPF website.

CORE has endorsed Lois Ashford and Jay Rehak for reelection. Jay and Lois were first elected in November 2009, and were the first CORE candidates to be elected to citywide office. Many CORE members view the 2009 pension fund elections as a pre-cursor to the May and June 2010 elections that saw CORE electing the CORE slate into power in the Chicago Teachers Union.

At the October 1, 2012, CORE meeting, CORE members received candidate information to distribute on behalf of 'Jay Lo'. Copies of the materials are available on the CORE website, www.coreteachers.com. 
