VIDEOS FROM THE STRUGGLE... Organizing against the 2012 Hit List... 'The same passion that I carry within me you carry within you'... Angela Surney and Kristine Mayle on video from the Teach-In at King High School December 3, 2011

Two videos, the total time of which is now about 12 minutes, are now available on You Tube for Substance readers to view. The first of the videos is parent Angela Surney who helped organize the struggle against the closing of Marconi Elementary School in 2011. Surney's fiery speech about justice brought the crowd of more than 500 people to their feet on Saturday morning as the Teach-In built up towards the protests which will unfold next week at the Chicago Board of Education.

"It's about justice!" Angela Surnay speaking to the crowd of more than 500 at the Teach in on December 3, 2011 at King High School. Substance photo by George N. Schmidt. That video deserves a name. One might be: "The same passion..."

The second video might be called "De La Cruz. The Truth Didn't Matter." The video shows the speech of Kristine Mayle, a special education teacher whose protests against the closing of De La Cruz Middle School began in 2007, when CPS first put the successful school on its Hit List while Arne Duncan was CEO of CPS. De La Cruz was closed based on the lies of CPS officials, and as some in the community predicted, the building was turned over to a politically powerful charter school (at a cost of $1 a year) after the closing. The De La Crus struggle helped lead to Kristine Mayle's growing activism in CORE and within the Chicago Teachers Union. Kristine Mayle stood with the students and community of De La Cruz in early 2008 when that school, which had been rated by everyone as wonderful, was put on the Hit List to be destroyed by Arne Duncan, Ron Huberman, and the Chicago Board of Education. She now serves as Financial Secretary of the 30,000 member Chicago Teachers Union.
