Chicago Teachers Union protests planned for July 27 Chicago Board of Education meeting and July 28 TIF hearings

The 30,000-member Chicago Teachers Union is calling on its members to join in protests at the July 27 meeting of the Chicago Board of Education and at the July 28 hearing on TIFs. The Board meeting begins at 10:30 a.m. at 125 S.Clark St. The TIF hearing will be held beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Chicago Military Academy High School, Bronzeville.

The following is the CTU notice (published on the union website, www.ctunet.com) from July 22, 2011.

Dear Member,

Our students, our families and our schools have suffered a decade of insecurity and instability caused by CPS. School closings, consolidations, rising class sizes, illegal firings, do not hire blacklisting, charter proliferation, ever-changing curricular and instructional mandates, the tyranny of the test, an unelected and unaccountable school board … and now the Board fires or “displaces” 1,000 experienced teachers and denies school staff a raise . CTU may not have money like the Board of Education, but we have 30,000 members and our parents and students. YOU are our collateral! YOU are our leverage!!
