Substance Editor to be honored at the University of Arizona
Substance editor George Schmidt will receive the “Kenneth Goodman Defense of Good Teaching” award at the University of Arizona on March 8, 2008. The award was announced at Substance deadline.
George and Sharon Schmidt will participate in the Adolescent and Children’s literature conference at the university on the weekend of March 7 - 9. Schmidt is scheduled to lead a presentation on restoring democracy and justice for children in the face of the tyranny of testing in an era of corporate “standards and accountability.”
The award is given by the Department of Language, Reading and Culture annually and is named after Kenneth Goodman, one of the nation’s most prolific researchers and writers on education.
The department informed Schmidt of the award as Substance was on deadline for the February issue.
Schmidt will be honored in Tucson, Arizona, where he and his wife, Substance Managing Editor Sharon Schmidt, will participate in the conference in March. Schmidt’s nomination was supported by Dr. Goodman and by Stephen Krashen and Susan Ohanian, according to a spokesperson for the department. “It’s a very moving honor,” Schmidt said. “Ken Goodman is a giant in American education. We can all be proud to be in his company.”
