June Substance still available for school sales, distribution… Contains complete May 21 school-by-school vote totals and major coverage of other issues

Approximately 4,000 copies of the June 2010 edition of Substance are still available for pick up at Substance and distribution of sale in Chicago’s public schools during the final three days before 27,000 Chicago Teachers Union members prepare to vote in the June 11 runoff election. They are being sold at steep discounts for people who purchase them in bundles of 100 papers ($50 per bundle). Lesser discounts are available to those who purchase between ten copies and 99 copies. Readers who wish to take advantage of this offer are advised to call the Substance office (773-725-7502) to make arrangement to pick up the papers.

Above, Page One of the June 2010 Substance, which is still available in bulk for sale or distribution in Chicago's public schools.Because additional large-scale runs of a tabloid newspaper like Substance recoup major cost efficiencies, Substance announced that teachers who purchase bundles of the paper (each bundle contains 100 copies of Substance) can do so for $50. Substance usually costs $2 per copy for individual copies and $1 per copy for amounts of ten or more. Many teachers purchase additional copies for sale in their schools each month. Substance had considerable additional copies printed for the June 2010 edition.

The 24-page regular edition of Substance was mailed to all paid subscribers on Friday, June 4, and under postal regulations governing periodicals rate is supposed to be delivered to everyone subscribing within seven days after it is mailed. Substance is a “Periodicals Rate” publication like most magazines and newspapers, including Time and The New Yorker. Cutbacks at the U.S. postal service since the beginning of the Bush administration and continuing under the Obama administration, however, have sometimes resulted in delays in the delivery of periodicals despite postal regulations. The May 2010 edition of Substance, which was mailed May 13, did not reach most subscribers until the first week of June. Substance has complained.

Those who wish to pick up copies of the June 2010 edition of Substance are advised to call the Substance office (773-725-7502) or the editor’s cell phone (773-401-6202) to make the arrangements, since time is short. Substance will also take e-mails on the matter (at Csubstance@aol.com). Anyone who purchases bulk quantities of Substance on Tuesday, June 8, when this notice is posted still has two days to distribute the paper prior to the June 11 voting in the schools.

Most schools will have voted by 9:00 a.m. on June 11.

[Full disclosure: George N. Schmidt will be serving as the CORE observer at the vote count by the American Arbitration Association on Friday, June 11. Following the May 21 CTU vote, Substance editorially endorsed the CORE slate, since no members of the Substance staff supported Marilyn Stewart’s United Progressive Caucus and staff members who had backed other slates prior to the May 21 vote threw their support to CORE and Karen Lewis as soon as their caucuses — CSDU, PACT, and SEA — voted to so so.]. 
