Editorial: A shorter Substance than we'd like to offer

Substance Editorial - March, 2008

At sixteen pages, this issue of Substance is one of the shortest in recent memory. This is partly because much of the material we were going to cover in depth for this issue was not made available to us by the Chicago Board of Education until the weekend before we went to press. This material included the complete reports of each of the hearing officers who presided over the tumultuous hearings on the school closings, consolidations, and “turnarounds” between February 4 and February 16, 2008.

Despite the fact that most of the more than 1,000 parents, students, teachers, and citizens who participated in the hearings believed that they were speaking to “The Board,” not one Board of Education member attended one of the hearings.

We will be reporting in more detail on some of this in the future. In the meantime, we hope that anyone reading this who is not a Substance subscriber takes the time to subscribe now. Things are tight. 
