COUNTDOWN: Full election results have now been at the Chicago Teachers Union for eight hours, but none are published on the CTU website

Chicago, May 25, 2010. It has now been 152 hours since the voting ended in Chicago's public schools for the first round of the 2010 Chicago Teachers Union election and eight hours since union financial secretary Mark Ochoa left the office of the American Arbitration Association with the complete results of the voting on May 21, 2010. At the time the AAA provided the CTU with the complete record of all the voting (and the school by school count), union officials refused to provide that information, in digital form, to this reporter (who worked as an observer during the count) or to the members of the union's "canvassing committee."

Chicago Teachers Union financial secretary Mark Ochoa (above, from a UPC photo) took exclusive possession of the complete report on the May 21, 2010 CTU election at 9:00 p.m. on May 24, 2010 after supporting a decision by a slim majority vote of the union's "canvassing committee" to not provide each member of the canvassing committee with an electronic copy of the full results report via e-mail. Ochoa was present at the offices of the American Arbitration Association throughout both nights of counting the ballots (May 21 - 22; May 24). Ochoa is the candidate for CTU vice president on the United Progressive Caucus slate in the current election. This notice will be updated every 12 hours until every member of the Chicago Teachers Union has every bit of information they should have had by noon Saturday (May 22) regarding all of the votes taken in the May 21 election, as well as the school-by-school breakdown.

[Full disclosure. This reporter, who also serves as editor in chief of Substance, was an observer for the Caucus Of Rank and file Educators (CORE) throughout the 22 hours of vote counting held on May 21, May 22, and May 24, 2010 at the offices of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) in Chicago]. 

There are so many firsts since Marilyn was elected and this is another one (not a good first either). The Union belongs to the members not a particular caucus so this is inexcusable and I do fault AAA for their part in this denial of rights to the members.

As of 9:51, results have not been posted.

I just checked the Union site and there is no update. Also, the time stamp is an hour off on the above posts and I don't know why there is a duplicate posting because I only clicked once.

Marilyn Stewart's Outrageous Tricks

This outrageous turn of election events-- where Marilyn Stewart is being seriously challenged with 65% of the voters as of the May 22nd announcements voting against her--is not surprising. That her financial secretary Mark Ochoa would take possession of the final count of the votes as of May 24th, 9:00 pm, and still have no annoucement as of 10:00 am the next morning, May 25th, is just another brazen piece of skullduggery in the long train of machinations that the United Progressive Caucus (UPC) under the misleadership of Marilyn Stewart has been guilty of. For more of the tricks and shenanigans read my other comment about Walter Jacobson following the Substance newspaper story about Marilyn's secret fund-raising with the high and mighty--a fundraising that wasn't even advertised on the union website for the union members to know about.

So when will we know about the final count of this election? Why is Marilyn, both head of the union and UPC caucus as well as a candidate, hiding the results of this election. She has done outrageous stuff before, and now it's more of the same from her. Let's hope she hasn't compromised this election in the hopes that a re-do will keep her from losing to CORE.

There is absoutely no excuse for the results not eing posted. My people who have been on the canvassing committee for several years tell me that AAA gives CTU a degital copy of everything on an Excel file and all they have to do is post it, as had always been donein the past.It takes 2 seconds. They just don't want us to have the Excel file. CORE should call them out on this. It was obvious to the people present for the final count that the Rules and Elections Committee Chair, Karen Kreinik, who is a UPC Member and on the slate as a CTU Trustee candidate, did not want any of the other caucuses to have them. In the past, we were always given copies of the results within 24 hours and the Excel file was posted within 24 hours. It's not brain science, but, who knows, maybe for them it is?

They put up just a number for each caucus, not each position. And they say all ballot positions will be re-run for the run off. That doesn't include the IFT/AFT delegates, does it? Are those "ballot positions"?

Count manipulation part deux

just as in the Nov 20 referendum vote now we are having the vote counts manipulated. The vote counts are in and since they are not being released they are therefore being manipulated.

All the caucuses should be provide with the excel files from AAA. Anything less is election fraud.

No, there is no run-off for the AFT Convention Delegates. They are elected by whoever gets the most votes. The CTU Constitution mandates that the officers must get 50% plus 1.

They are just being purposely recalcitrant about posting the Excel file.

Former Webmaster, CTU

When I was the webmaster for the CTU (2004-08), I felt it was my responsibilty to publish the verified results for any and all elections the moment they were available. I very much remember one 3AM call and the results were posted no later than 3:15AM. As Linda Porter stated, it is not brain surgery to post the school by school breakdown.

Sadly, this is an obvious political maneuver by the current administration to prevent the opposition caucuses from obtaining pertinent information for planning the next phase of their campaign. And it blatantly shows what lengths they will go to to thwart transparency to the Membership and anyone who opposes them.

If I'm reading this correctly, it looks like CORE won AFt delegates.

Looks like UPC lost AFT delegate Vote

just a quick glance looks like CORE AFT candidates got more votes than UPC AFT candidates.

so the victory press release was a lie.

Looks like CORE candidates for AFT delegates got more votes than some of the UPC officer candidates. lowest CORE delegate vote count is 5025

Of course, they didn't post an Excel file and the PSRP Functionals are not listed. When you click on the link the high school functionals come up again. Can't they get anything right the first time?

I do think that there is a strong indication that games have been played with the results or there would have no problem with each caucus having their own file copy. How do we know that the results are the same as the ones given to the Union? The Union couldn't hide how well CORE did in the election so it looks like the AFT delegates will be a mixed CORE and UPC (but the majority will be UPC). Marilyn will still hold her position in the AFT so some things won't change no matter what the election results are.

This is starting to look like . . .

This is starting to look like the type of election that former President Jimmy Carter would typically monitor in some banana republic.

Luckily CORE has no problem using lawyers

If all else fails, I'm sure a lawsuit will be on its way.

Boy, there sure was a quick turnaround on the report of the rally, unlike the election results which were prepared already for the union. Had to get a picture of Marilyn smiling next to a police officer while being cited -- for the good of the union, of course!

One of those Officer Friendlys was mad about my students waiting for a bus on the corner and asked, "Where's your bus?" My student replied, "I don't know," and he snapped back, "What do you know? Save our schools?" Typical of the respect my kids have come to endure at 125 S. Clark, I guess.
