UPC, Marilyn Stewart continue using union time and money to promote UPC, Stewart candidacy
Chicago Teachers Union members at Chicago's Percy Julian High School at 103rd and Elizabeth St. on the city's far south side were surprised to learn that three of the four current officers of the union would be hosting a meeting at their school following the end of the school week on Friday, April 16, 2010.
While opposition caucuses within the Chicago Teachers Union continued to protest the use of "official union business" by CTU President Marilyn Stewart to promote the candidacy of Stewart and her United Progressive Caucus, Stewart continued on the campaign trail during the week of April 12 - April 16 without missing a beat.
A poster displayed at the school beginning on April 14 announced that CTU President Marilyn Stewart, current Financial Secretary Mark Ochoa, and Recording Secretary Mary McGuire will be at the meeting. The two other union officers were not announced in the poster. Stewart has used her office in an expensive (estimates that it cost more than $1 million are now being heard) purge of her vice president, Ted Dallas, and Treasurer Linda Porter is not featured on any of Stewart's versions of official union business. Porter is running for CTU President this year, but is not allowed to campaign on union time at union expense.
Following a small confrontation with with two CORE activists on Monday, April 12, Stewart continued staging events that observers said amounted to campaign rallies.
Her final event of the week is scheduled for Julian High School on Friday, April 16. Stewart generally has her staff follow up each event with a letter, paid for by the union, to each union member in the school which she visited.
The other candidates for CTU president in the upcoming May 21 election are Karen Lewis (CORE caucus), Deborah Lynch (PACT caucus), Linda Porter (CSDU caucus) and Ted Hajiharis (SEA caucus). Stewart and the UPC have refused to answer questions from Substance reporters.

Next Friday April 23, all bills are suppose to be passed out of committee. May 7,adjornment.
That date is only three weeks away. So we must keep close tabs on Springfield .
