School closing hearings continue first week of February... Marshall and Phillips high schools on February 1 at 125 S. Clark St.

Hearings on proposed closings, consolidations, phase outs and "turnarounds" for Chicago's public schools continue on February 1, 2010, and for the next two weeks. Since the hearings and locations are subject to possible change, it's best for people to call CPS before making plans to attend the hearings. On Saturday, January 30, hearing office Fred Bates ended the hearing on Curtis Elementary School after parents, teachers and community residents became angry at Batest's high-handed approach to the hearing.

At the hearings on the proposed closing of Guggenheim Elementary School on January 28, several students testified against the closing of the schools they described as "family." A number of them were moved to tears, but under rules established by Hearing Officer Fred Bates, the students were identified only by a number. Above, "Student Number Two" begins crying after trying to explain what Guggenheim means to him and his family. Substance photo by George N.
