He was my Chicago State University graduate advisor and professor. He recommended that I go into teaching after I had a car accident. He told me my body could only do so much Manual Labor. I listened to his advice and have four children and a good job now.
Doc would not allow anyone to touch any power tool until we learned how to use the hand tools first and wrote the safety procedures for that power tool. Still use this method when teaching a shop class.
"There are only two speeds in the woodshop, slow and slower."
When writing my thesis, he would stop reading and say, see you next week if he found more than two mistakes on a page.
Dr. Rathnau was an open and honest man, giving advice not for himself but in the interest of his students. I am forever grateful to have met you.
