[ Closed School Sold for $1 ] Public Building Commission of Chicago sale of property at 9207 S Phillips Ave to Chicago Youth Centers for use as early childhood, after school, summer and community center

This is how gentrification works.

Buckingham ES public school closed May 23, 2013, with 100% special education students, 97% Black students, and 97% low-income students. The Chicago Public Schools closed the neighborhood special education school and sent all those grammar school students with disabilities to Montefiore Special ES 1310 S Ashland, 13 miles away, which takes at least 1.5 hours of travel in light traffic one way.

Naturally, no working family can handle such change for one child in the family, so they probably moved to another neighborhood or out of the city altogether. Then bingo a private education company gets the closed Buckingham school building for $1 eight years later, a good deal for the privatizers and gentrifiers, a bad deal for Chicago taxpayers and for working families.
