Substance mailed again to all schools facing closing... If you are at one of those 17 schools and do not receive a copy of the May 2012 Substance, please let us know!

The May 2012 Substance, like the previous two issues, has been mailed to every teacher and other staff at each of the ten schools facing the professional death sentence called "Turnaround" and to the teachers and other staff at the seven schools being closed, phased out, or otherwise destroyed by the latest action of the Chicago Board of Education's Hit List. We mailed these newspapers as complimentary copies, each to an individual working at the school, under our Periodicals Permit, through the United States Postal Service.

Substance and our predecessors have been around the USA for more than 200 years. Subscribe or donate today to keep this long tradition alive as the struggle for justice increases in intensity in Chicago and across the USA in 2012.If you are a teacher or other staff member at any of those schools and do not receive the May Substance by Monday, June 4, 2012, please call or email our office (773-725-7502; Csubstance @ aol.com). Your principal did not have the legal right to throw away United States mail addressed to you and your brothers and sisters, and we will ask that he be prosecuted for having done so, not only this month, but for the previous two months, if you confirm what we suspect.

The June 2012 Substance will also be mailed to the 17 fateful schools on Rahm Emanuel's professional Death List. If you wish to subscribe to Substance, you can do so using the button on the left here now.

In the June 2012 Substance, we will be placing the following notice:

Freedom has never been free...

And neither is this ‘free’ copy of this historic issue of Substance you are holding in your hands today.

This issue of Substance is being mailed under our mailing permit as a complimentary copy to thousands of Chicago teachers and other school workers. On line every day (at www.substancenews.net) and monthly in print, Substance provides Chicago with the most comprehensive and accurate reporting and analysis about the city’s public schools — often in the national and even international contexts. For Substance to survive, we need you to donate or buy a print subscription now. You can subscribe (or make a donation) on line or send in your check using the coupon on the back page. Subscription details are on the back page.

Support Substance, buy a subscription

I hope all CPS teachers and administrators consider buying a subscription to Substance. I read the publication regularly, not only because it is informative, but also because it includes information never published by the Tribune or the Sun Times. Clearly, those publications have an anti-union bias and consequently, Substance is the alternative to Union bashing in this town.

I encourage all who care about Public Education to support Substance by purchasing a subscription. Just knowing Substance is in existence comforts me in that I realize there are other people in the world who view Chicago schools from a student centered perspective.
