1.) Remote learning will continue through the end of 2020, with a goal of bringing students back to school starting in early 2021. Students in pre-k and moderate and intensive cluster programs will tentatively be able to return to in-person learning on Monday, January 11. All other elementary and middle school students will tentatively be able to return on Monday, February 1. A tentative return date has not yet been set for high school students. Staff members will return to school a week in advance to prepare for a safe return for their students. As a reminder, all families will have the option to have their students continue learning from home.

2.) Elementary and middle school families will be sent a survey later this month about returning to school.

During the week of November 23, elementary and middle school families can expect to receive a survey to share if they intend to send their students back to school or continue learning remotely. Families of pre-k and cluster program students who already completed the survey in October do not need to complete it again if their preference has not changed.

School buildings will have enhanced safety measures when students return.

3.) School buildings will have enhanced safety measures when students return. To support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s five key strategies for mitigating COVID-19 transmission, schools will require health screeners, temperature checks, and face coverings for anyone entering the building. All classrooms have been thoroughly cleaned and will each have a new HEPA air purifier that will remove 99.99 percent of airborne mold, bacteria, and viruses.

4.) Sports are paused until further notice. Governor Pritzker has moved Illinois to Tier 3 of the Restore Illinois Mitigation Plan beginning Friday, November 20, in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. In line with this decision, high school sports—including practices and competitions—will be paused until further notice.

5.) We can all help stop the spread of COVID-19 this holiday season. Following Chicago’s stay-at-home advisory, avoiding travel, and limiting holiday gatherings to only those in your households are important steps to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. If you will be gathering in larger groups, please plan to quarantine for 14 days afterward to limit transmission. We wish you a happy, healthy holiday season and will continue communicating regularly across all of our platforms about our plan to reopen Chicago’s schools in early 2021.
