Dear Colleagues,

The COVID-19 pandemic is an evolving public health crisis, and we are committed to keeping you informed of public health guidance updates. The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) updated the city’s Emergency Travel Order. Travel advisories are now divided into three risk groups.

Steps to follow the Order:

When planning, review the CDPH Travel Order state list. Avoid all non-essential travel.

Prior to arrival, Orange list travelers must receive a negative COVID-19 test result no longer than 72 hours prior to arrival and have proof of negative results OR plan to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. Red list travelers should plan for a 14-day quarantine.

Upon arrival in Chicago, Orange list travelers should maintain a copy of negative test result with them while in Chicago or quarantine for 14 days if they chose not to take a test. Red list travelers should quarantine for 14 days.

CPS employees who have traveled to any of the locations listed in the red or orange category are required to notify their supervisor before returning to work, even if they tested negative for COVID-19 upon their return.

Employees should work with their supervisors to determine whether teleworking is feasible for their role for 14 days after their return date. If teleworking is not feasible, the employee may be eligible to use any combination of the following leave options to complete the required self-quarantine:

- Family First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA)

- Leave, if eligible under the Chicago Board of Education’s FMLA policy

- Benefit days

- Absence excused time

Updated as of 11/10/2020

In response to increased and high rates of COVID-19 transmission across the United States, and to add to Chicago’s efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19, the City is issuing a Travel Order applicable to anyone coming into the City of Chicago from designated states with a significant degree of community-wide spread of COVID-19. Anyone traveling from a state on the Orange list is directed to obtain a negative COVID-19 test result no more than 72 hours prior to arrival in Chicago or quarantine for a 14-day period (or the duration of their time in Chicago, whichever is shorter). Anyone traveling from a state on the Red list must quarantine for a 14-day period or the duration of their time in Chicago, whichever is shorter. The Order is subject to the limited exemptions outlined in the ‘Exemptions tab’.

The order will be in effect until further notice.

Individuals who are found in violation of this order and spread COVID-19, as a result, are subject to fines of $100–$500 per day, up to $7,000, at the direction of the CDPH. Failure to follow this public health order and returning to work prior to completing the 14-day quarantine may result in disciplinary action, including termination.

Thank you for your commitment to keeping our community safe and healthy. For additional guidance, please review the CPS-specific and CDPH frequently asked questions. If you have any questions about benefits and leave related to this order, please review this guidance or contact HR4U at (773) 553-HR4U (4748) or cpsloa@cps.edu.
