Rat on Western Avenue... Carpenters union pickets non-union site in Lincoln Square...

Carpenters union pickets a non-union job site on Western Ave in Chicago. Substance photo by Jean Schwab.I was driving down Western Avenue on August 16th and saw a big rat displayed. There were two demonstrators out in front of an apartment building being built on Eastwood and Western Avenue. There were two demonstrators carrying signs were out in front. I stopped and asked what the rat represented. Mark Verlisck of the Carpenters’ union told me that the builder was using non-union carpenters to build that forty-unit building.

The builder had hired non-union carpenters from the suburbs paying them $12 an hour. He was taking advantage of them. The builder planned to rent each unit for about $1,200 a month. Using non-union workers at $12 an hour and no benefits was a great savings for the builder who is going to make a lot of money from the building while cheating union and nonunion workers.
