ALDERMANIC UPDATES: Tara Stamps and United Working Families to host forum on violence on Wednesday, January 21 at West Side church
Tara Stamps, who is running for alderman of the 37th Ward against incumbent Emma Mitts, has announced that she will be sponsoring a public forum on violence this WEDNESDAY, January 21, 2015.... "37th Ward Community Forum on Neighborhood Safety and Violence," Hosted by Tara Stamps and United Working Families, Wednesday, January 21, 6:00-7:30 pm, New Kingdom Church, 5213 W Potomac.

As we honor Dr. King today, I'm reminded of his call to action for all people of conscience--that all it takes for evil to succeed is for good people to do nothing.
I'm running for alderman because I refuse to do nothing in the face of the evils that have taken root in the 37th Ward: the connected crises of disinvestment, violence, unemployment, and low-wage work. For too long, our communities have been represented by a rubber-stamp alderman who has chosen to side with the wealthy and powerful instead of standing up for what we deserve.
As we celebrate Dr. King's legacy today, please join me in committing to take action for racial justice and a fair economy. Consider making a donation of $10, $25, or $50 today so that we can keep up the momentum for a people's movement for the 37th Ward. Substance readers are reminded that as early as a decade ago, Emma Mitts was praising Walmart for providing "jobs" (at the lowest possible wages) as she denounced those who opposed the entry of Walmart into the community. And as late as less than a year ago, Mitts stood with Rahm Emanuel to praise the addition of another Noble Street charter school in her ward. The new "campus," which is across the street from Prosser Vocational High School, was unnecessary and another attack on the city's real public schools. During her remarks at the Noble Street event, Mitts hugged Mayor Rahm Emanuel and told the audience that Rham had been sent by God for Chicago's people.
