Building a campaign for Mayor of Chicago takes more than a clever quip.Without even breaking his professional smile following the childish dissing he received by a small faction of the staff of the Chicago Teachers Union on Halloween (at the union's LEAD dinner), Second Ward Alderman Bob Fioretti took a clean shot against his soon-to-be rival in the mayor's race by proclaiming that the proposed George Lucas museum.
Following the surprising announcements at the CTU's annual LEAD dinner that the some of the union's leaders wanted Jesus Garcia for mayor, a number of members of the City Council's "Progressive Caucus" began wondering how far their support for the union should go, especially since they were the ones on the picket lines during the Chicago Teachers Strike of 2012 and Jesus Garcia was not. While those questions were continuing into the week when the CTU's House of Delegates was scheduled to meet (and to be asked to make the surprising October 31 announcement official), the municipal races continued.
Nominating petitions for candidates for all city offices have not even been submitted at the Board of Election Commissioners yet. As a result, those who are asking the huge (29,000 dues paying members) CTU to make an "endorsement" are a bit premature, and the discussions became more and more heated as more and more of the union's members began to learn about what happened during the week before Halloween.
Whether Jabba lurks on Chicago's lakefront in an offensive way will be up to voters and citizens as well as Rahm Emanuel. One of the things related to the controversial museum design is why Chicago's mayor decided to "offshore" the architecture for the project.
