Protest against Republican tax bill shuts down LaSalle St...

Substance photo by Jean Schwab.A protest agains the Republican tax bill currently being debated in Washington took place on Monday, December 4, 2017, with the intention of shutting down LaSalle St. the Wall Street of the Midwest.

At the height of the demonstration, there were between 450 and 500 protesters there, but it seemed like more. The protesters did shut down LaSalle street and a few adjacent streets. Speakers included a senior citizen afraid of losing Medicare; a Stroger Hospital Nurse who is already overwhelmed by seriously ill patients and fearful of even more sick people with no Medicare or Medicaid and loss of staff jobs at Stroger; students afraid of falling more into debt and others. The protest was organized by several groups including Indivisible, People's Lobby and community organizations across Chicago.
