As protests grew over the 14-month delayed release of a cop dash cam video showing Black youth Laquan McDonald's being brutally gunned down by a police officer, the city-wide movement took a decidedly political turn: Rahm Resign! The call for the removal of Chicago's mayor began sounding realistic, do-able. Starting at Daley Plaza across from City Hall on December 9, 2015, a powerful and kinetic street march dramatically began with the temporary arrest and almost immediate release of popular young activist Lamon Reccord. Hear the speeches on the street by the advanced guard of the Rahm Resign movement in its early stages.

Aware of co-optation maneuvers by City Hall, a speaker warns: "We're saying to the Mayor of Chicago that we don't give a damn who you call. All of those that you think are in control of the people, this is just the beginning. And any of us sent to the table that say they can control us, they're telling you a lie." Part 2, in late December...

As part of the protests on New Year's Eve 2015 - 2016, demonstrators pummeled a pinata of Rahm Emanuel. Labor Beat photo. While other anti-Rahm marches took place elsewhere in Chicago on New Year's Eve, a large group held a protest inside City Hall. They brought a Rahm Emanuel New Year's piata (a Rahm-yata). After speeches and a 'die-in' on the First Floor, they took the elevator to the Mayor's office on the Fifth Floor for the piata party. Throughout, speakers discussed political and legal aspects of the Emanuel administration's crimes. "A murder cover-up is stealing our democracy right from under our feet," activist Rousemary Vega said. "He has to resign or he has to be charged." As for Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez who the activists say also must resign, another speaker, standing before the Mayor's office, declared: "You [Alvarez] charge cops with the wrong crime. Van Dyke [the cop who shot Laquan McDonald 16 times] should not have been charged with first degree murder...He should have been charged with second degree murder. I'm not a lawyer and I know that. So I know Anita Alvarez knows that." This December 31 protest can also be viewed at: https://youtu.be/KIXeA3NWhqs
