Dramatic protest video now available... 'Chicago fights to save our schools'
Between May 18, 2013 and May 20, 2013, the Chicago Teachers Union allied with parents, community activists, and children from across the city led marches to highlight the destruction of the schools that was looming when the Chicago Board of Education voted on May 22, 2013, on the proposed "Hit List" of schools to be closed on orders from Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Anyone who is still trying to figure out what has been happening in Chicago can get a quick introduction to it in the eight-minute video that has been distributed by the Chicago Teachers Union following the three days of marches and protests that preceded the May 22, 2013 vote of the Chicago Board of Education. While Chicago teachers and other members of the Chicago Teachers Union were voting on May 17, 2013 to re-elect the militant leaders of their union – Karen Lewis, her fellow officers, and the entire slate run by CORE, the Caucus Of Rank-and-file Educators – the union was also launching a massive three-day series of marches which brought hundreds of people past the schools that were on Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Hit List. The marches ended at Chicago’s City Hall on May 20, 2013 with the arrest of teachers and others who blocked the famous elevators in the hall of the city’s iconic center of power.
The video is being shown across the USA, especially now following the vote of the city’s un-elected school board to close 49 schools, “turnaround” five, and “co-locate” at 11. As Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis has stated, Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Board of Education, by voting to continue their attacks on the city’s real public schools, have placed themselves on “the wrong side of history.”
