Letter: CPS military officer goes ballistic at ‘Anchors Away’

November 13, 2007

Substance

We had a good distribution crew out this morning for “Anchors Away,” which is now in its fourth year of publication. Ron, Scott, Dale, Shelby, Neal, Craig, Mike, and Helen. We did a distribution of about 1,100 or more. Discards looked to be about 75. A person identifying himself as a “lieutenant colonel” in CPS schools has made it his business to be at our distribution for the second month in a row, yelling and screaming and spitting all the while. Ron asked him if that was really a good model to show the cadets, but didn’t get an answer. The man — who gives him the finger — took pictures this morning.

A number of the cadets take copies of “Anchors Away” in what seems to be a serious way. We got interviews with three students, and activist Luci stopped by to say she really appreciates our persistence in the work and getting out Anchors Away, and it is an inspiration to her. She is interested in supporting the Morton West High School students, and I encouraged her to think about what might be done inside the school to raise the key issues.
