LEAD Dinner almost sold out at last minute, Substance table has space

The annual Chicago Teachers Union LEAD dinner is being held tonight, October 26, 2012, at Chicago's Plumbers Hall at 1340 W. Washington, beginning at 5:00 p.m. The power of the CTU has been building up since the election of the CORE slate headed by Karen Lewis and Jesse Sharkey in June 2010. Members of the union's staff have been working with legislators to correct many of the misconceptions about CPS finances and operations, and the work is beginning to pay off. This is especially true now that the leadership of the Chicago Public Schools is once again in chaos. CPS has had four Chief Executive Officers in four years, and middle management is even more disrupted.

But the truth about such things is not yet known to most of the local and state legislators, and as CTU needs more friends in City Council and Springfield, the LEAD becomes more important.

In addition to general space available, Substance has space for staff and friends of Substance, but we must know by the afternoon of October 26. Please call 773-725-6182 or 773-401-6202.

On October 25, the union sent out the following announcement:

Brothers and Sisters, the entire world now believes in the power of the Chicago Teachers Union. LEAD 2012 is almost SOLD OUT! A very limited number of tickets is still available. It is past time to engage our lawmakers. We must communicate with them about the conditions of our schools and the state of education de-form in Chicago. Our lawmakers have a great amount of responsibility. They turn concepts into law. Before Public Act 97-0008 became law it was SB7 and pushed vigorously by groups like Advance Illinois, Democrats for Education Reform, and Stand for Children. Our lawmakers need to hear from you!

Come to 2012 LEAD and share a meal with your legislators.Tell them how the new REACH Evaluation (PERA2010) impacts you. Tell them how school closures, turnarounds, and charters create instability in our classrooms. Tell them you need them to support an elected representative school board.

Tell them you are an educator, a parent, a taxpayer, and a voter.

If you haven't already purchased your tickets to this year's LEAD please do so immediately, there will be a limited number of tickets available at the door.
