BOARDWATCH: Parents speaking out against the Longest School Day at the Board of Education's February 22 meeting
The latest Substance video from the February 22, 2012 meeting of the Chicago Board of Education features the parents from Mount Greenwood and Beverly who have been organizing against the Longest School Day being foisted on the city by CPS and the Emanuel administration. One of the things the parents note, in addition to the fact that CPS has been ignoring virtually all parental and teacher concerns about the appropriateness of going to the longest school day, is that CPS seems to be planning to privatize a lot of the activities to take place during the hours, since they have provided no way to fund real CPS teachers for all that time.

Mount Greenwood parents, Michelle Bever and Denise Murphy testify at the Chicago Board of Education's February meeting. They spoke to the longer school day and how this one size fits all policy was unrealistic and impractical. They wore t shirts with a slogan, "6.5 to Thrive", in order to get their point across.
Mount Greenwood and 19th Ward parents are all wearing "6.5 to thrive" tee shirts to show their opposition to the 7.5 hour school day being forced on Chicago's schools by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his handpicked school board. Concerned Pioneer Parents for a Better School Day
We are parents whose children attend “Pioneer Schools,” those Chicago Public Schools that have adopted a 7.5-hour school day during the 2011-2012 school year. We feel that the Board of Education, the CEO of CPS, and city officials have not engaged in a dialog with parents about this lengthened schoo...
