PACT, Deborah Lynch announce support for Karen Lewis, CORE

After participating in the CTU Class Size Rally May 25, 2010 PACT members met to discuss the May 21st election. Although their candidates did not garner enough votes to be in the upcoming run off they are still dedicated to their goal to help make the Union strong again and to be more responsive to members needs. To that end they have issued the following statement:

CORE candidate for President of the Chicago Teachers Union Karen Lewis (above left) makes a point during the April 23, 2010, candidates' forum at Curie High School, while her then opponent (n the five-way race) Deborah Lynch (right) looks on. Following the May 21, 2010 election which narrowed the race to CORE versus UPC, Deborah Lynch and her PACT caucus announced their support for Karen Lewis and CORE on May 26, 2010. Schmidt. The PACT (ProActive Chicago Teachers) Caucus of the CTU announced its support today for Karen Lewis, the CORE (Caucus of Rand & File Educators) candidate for CTU President, in the upcoming June 11 Chicago Teachers Union run-off election. PACT cited Lewis' stated commitment not to re-open the CTU contract, to protect the pension fund, to fight school closings and to restore transparency and democracy in the CTU as the reasons for its endorsement.

Deborah Lynch chairman of PACT has spoken to Ms. Lewis and, on behalf of herself and her caucus, has wished her success. 

Many thanks to Debbie and PACT

Union members owe Debbie Lynch and PACT a great debt of gratitude for their contributions to democracy and social justice in our union. Debbie is one of the most brilliant, dedicated, and hard-working union leaders I have known. I wish her and the union leaders in her caucus continued success in their endeavors and thank them for their proffered support for our endeavors in CORE.

I couldn't have said it better than Terry. I don't think a reform agenda would have dominated this year's election if not for the groundwork of PACT. I hope very much to work with members of all the caucuses in the future to rebuild our union, repair our image in the public, stop the attacks on our profession, and unite in the face of some very aggressive and entrenched opposition.

Debbie... Thanks for your dedication to the fight to make CTU a strong and powerful voice for teachers and paraprofessionals throughout the city. Your slogan, "good working conditions are good learning conditions" epitomizes what it's all about. I am delighted that we will be going into battle side by side to reconquer our union and its potential.

Debbie Lynch's Support

Debbie Lynch ran an awesome campaign and I've been waiting to hear if she'd endorse CORE. Thank you Debbie from the bottom of my heart. Honestly, I was hurt by the '03-'07 contract as I was displaced twice, but now I feel I have been compensated for my loss by your endorsement, because I love CORE for making me feel whole, worthy, and accepted in the CPS school community again.

? Person's title or the title of the piece?

I've just now realized that it is indeed the title of the piece that's wanted in the box/"field" under "Add your own comment", not the title of the person, which in my case would be Retired Teacher.

How do I finally know for sure? I've just realized that the title is made bold-faced as more important than the commenter's name. This make sense only if it's the title of the piece that's wanted so readers can select what's of interest to them.

I started using the title of the piece a while ago following the lead of others, but I just now realized that the bold face it's given is the answer to the question.

I was glad do read that PACT is now in the fold. I have this advice for CORE

when the glorious day of June 11th arrives. Eliminate the current field reps in total.

surely the UPC will try and leave them in a position to screw CORE ,just like they

screwed PACT when they came to office. So I would like to see CORE rent a storefront

on Michigan Ave anywhere between 103th and 115th streets get some second hand

office furniture and house them there . Get them as far away from you as you can.

Even while they are under contract and must be paid send them into exile.

Thanks PACT

I too want to thank PACT for all they've done to turn things around and for being good sports by being the first to throw their support to CORE. I hope the other caucuses will follow. I like the suggestion above for field reps. I'd like to add the suggestion that the contract is reopened and teachers have to give up all or part of their raises that field reps have to do the same thing. In addition, look into eliminating some of the field rep positions. If a position is closed then I believe you aren't bound to the contract (at least that's what the Board says.

On Endorsing CORE

Thank you, Margaret. Actually, PACT was not the first opposition caucus to endorse Karen Lewis for President of the Chicago Teachers Union.

We have been accused of being a top-down managed group where PACT chairman Deborah Lynch makes all the decisions, but that simply isn't true.

The eleven of us on the PACT campaign's leadership team met after participating in Tuesday's demonstration to discuss our endorsement. Every one of us had an opportunity to say his/her piece, and then we voted. That's the way our meetings have been all year.

So, waiting for a time we could all get together and discuss it meant that we weren't the first to endorse CORE. Nonetheless, we are dedicated to electing Karen Lewis and her team and restoring democracy to the Chicago Teachers Union.

Thanks, Danny

Danny,

We truly appreciate your endorsement and support.

You have been extremely dedicated to your team and did some great work in the first election.

The PACT field operations were especially commendable.

I am looking forward to working with you in the weeks ahead.
